On the afternoon of May 29, 2020, the first online symposium organized by the International Coalition of Intelligent Manufacturing (ICIM) was successfully held. Prof. Zhou Ji (Co-chairman of ICIM), Prof. Li Peigen (Vice-chairman of ICIM) and more than 100 delegates from ICIM founding members and ICIM academic committee attended the symposium.
Online Symposia Held by ICIM
The COVID-19 pandemic has been disrupting manufacturing and global supply chain with serious impact on almost all aspects of human society. The global manufacturing PMI index fell to 39.5% in April 2020. On one hand, the shutdown of manufacturing factories in many countries has led to a break in the global manufacturing supply chain; on the other hand, the lockdown in many countries have led to a decline in household consumption, which has caused a sharp decline in global manufacturing orders after a steep decline in the global service industry. And the decline of the manufacturing industry itself will cause enterprises to shrink, postpone, or even cancel the investment in the field of intelligent manufacturing, which put great pressure on the intelligent manufacturing industry. Faced up with these challenges, ICIM plans to organize a series of online symposia to bring together experienced practioners from different industry sectors to share how they have been deploying effective responses to the COVID-19 crisis, and explore how intelligent manufacturing can play a role in the global supply chain and value chain reconstruction process.
With the theme as "Manufacturing Responses and Global Supply Chain Collaboration amid the pandemic", the first symposium was hosted by Dr. Huang Pei, Deputy Secretary General of ICIM. In the address, Prof. Li Peigen reviewed a number of important activities held by ICIM since the kick-off meeting held on May 8, 2019, and research results of ICIM such as "Top 10 Scientific and Technological Developments in Intelligent Manufacturing 2019", "2019 Intelligent Manufacturing Report" and "2019 Frontier Technology of Intelligent Manufacturing".
Mr. Zhang Qiang, the Chief Representative of the Beijing office of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), introduced the actions that ASME took in promoting intelligent manufacturing and anti-pandemic technology. Mr. Gu Jiandang, President of Phoenix Contact (China) Holding Co., Ltd., introduced the pandemic impact on German manufacturing and the response strategies of German companies. Ms. Lang Yan, Director of Government Communication (China) of PTC shared specific experience for PTC to actively promote scientific and technological anti-pandemic measures. Mr. Li Hong, Director of Government Relations (China) of Dassault Systemes Corporation, introduced how Dassault Systemes’ simulation technology helping fight against Covid-19 pandemic in Wuhan. Mr. Tomizawa Katsuyuki, Chief Representative of Mitsubishi Electric (China) Co., Ltd., analyzed the important role of intelligent manufacturing in helping companies fight against Covid-19. Mr. Zhu Weixiang, General Manager of Monitor ERP System (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., introduced the impact of the pandemic on Swedish manufacturing, and the proposal that enterprises should formulate short-term and long-term response measures to accelerate the digital transformation of enterprises. Dr. Sui Junyou, Global Vice President of NUMECA, shared the localization measures taken by NUMECA in China, the development of cloud applications, and the coordination and mutual help to resist the adverse effects of the outbreak of Covid-19. Dr. Chee Fai Tan, Vice President of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, analyzed the impact of the pandemic on the Malaysian economy and proposed measures to re-establish and stabilize the end-to-end supply chain. Mr. Xie Shilai, the CEO of Ningbo PIA Automation Holding Corp, took PIA Automation as an example, explained how international Chinese companies can grasp the opportunities from the crisis. Mr. Li Junqi, chairman of Foxconn Industrial Internet, shared the successful experience of how smart manufacturing and industrial Internet as two-wheel drive strategy fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr. Tomizawa Katsuyuki (Chief Representative of Mitsubishi Electric (China) Co., Ltd.,) Introduced How Intelligent Manufacturing Helped Mitsubishi Electric Fight Against the Pandemic
Enterprise representatives agreed that under the situation of COVID-19 pandemic, countries should strengthen extensive communication and collaboration in the manufacturing supply chain. Enterprises themselves must accelerate digital transformation and continue to promote intelligent manufacturing to enhance their ability to respond to unexpected crisis and search for new opportunities.
Finally, Prof. Zhou Ji, the co-chairman of ICIM, summarized the online Symposium. Prof. Zhou Ji emphasized that manufacturing is the main body of the national economy, the foundation of building a strong country. Intelligent manufacturing is very important for the innovation and imporovement of manufacturing enterprises, and is the main path for the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industries. ICIM will continue to organize a series of conferences and activities in the future, adhering to the spirit of unity and cooperation, openness and innovation, and continue to promote the development of intelligent manufacturing.
The first online symposium ended in a warm atmosphere. ICIM is an international organization composed of scientific and technological societies, enterprises, research institutions and universities from many countries and regions in the world that actively promote intelligent manufacturing. It was launched on May 8th, 2019. ICIM not only provides a mature and open communication platform for the industry, but also actively promotes the development of global intelligent manufacturing.
